Ursula Strategy Guide

Ursula has one of the biggest personalities out of any Disney Villain. She is also one of the most recognizable movie villains. She is bold and won’t let anything stand in her way of becoming queen of the sea.

In this strategy guide, I will break down this iconic character and show you how to win as Ursula.

Ursula Strategy Guide

Let’s start with a quick rundown of Ursula’s objective and how to reach her goal.

Objective

To win as Ursula you must start your turn with the Crown and the Trident at her Lair as well as defeating King Triton along the way.

Obstacles

Ursula is one of the few villains that starts off the game with a lock token. This token is placed at The Palace. Unlike other villains, Ursula is not able to completely remove this token from her board. Instead, she is able to move the lock token from The Palace to Ursula’s Lair using the card Change Form.

What are Binding Contracts

Ursula does not have a vanquish action anywhere on her board. Instead, she uses a variety of Binding Contract cards to defeat heroes. Binding Contract is an item card that is attached to a hero and they are defeated once that hero is moved to a specific location in Ursula’s realm.

The Winning Villainous Cards

These are the 2 cards in Ursula’s deck you will need to focus on finding in order to win the game:

  • Crown
  • Trident

So now that you know which cards you should be looking for let’s take a look at Ursula’s deck and I will show you which strategies you should use.

Ursula’s Cards

Note: Cards with a * next to them are the most important to winning as Ursula.

Ally Cards

Ursula Ally Cards

Flotsam & Jetsam

Copies: 1 Each | Cost: 2 | Strength: 4

Since Ursula does not have a vanquish action on her board, she doesn’t need many allies. There are two in her deck, Flotsam and Jetsam. Both have the ability to move a hero from their location to an adjacent unlocked location when activated.

The only way for Ursula to defeat heroes is by moving them to the  location specified on a Binding Contract card. Because of this, Flotsam and Jetsam’s ability will be extremely useful for defeating heroes.

Condition Cards

Ursula's Condition Cards

Note: I am a firm believer that condition cards are a waste of your time, especially at the beginning of the game. So I recommend getting rid of these cards if you draw them. There are some exceptions, but my general rule is this, don’t keep a condition card for more than a turn or two max.

Arrogance

Copies: 2

Arrogance can only be played if an opponent defeats a hero with a strength of four or more. When played, Arrogance allows you to draw three cards from your deck and then discard any three cards from your hand.

Trickery

Copies: 2

Trickery can only be played if an opponent has six or more power. When played, reveal and play the top card of that player’s fate deck.

Effect Cards

Ursula's Effect Cards

Change Form *

Copies: 3 | Cost: 1

Change Form allows you to move the lock token to either Ursula’s Lair or The Palace. The Palace is the only location in Ursula’s realm that allows you to move a hero. So unless you have Flotsam or Jetsam in play then you will need to have this location unlocked to defeat heroes.

Divination *

Copies: 2 | Cost: 1

Divination allows you to reveal cards from your deck until you come across a Binding Contract. Once you do, add it to your hand and discard the other cards. This will help you burn through your deck to find cards to deal with heroes. The discarded cards may include the ones you need like the Crown or the Trident. If they are discarded then you can use Opportunist to recover them.

Grow Giant

Copies: 3 | Cost: 1

Grow Giant allows Ursula to perform an additional action from an adjacent location, regardless if it locked or not. This helps balance the fact that you will only be able to have three locations available to you at any given time.

Opportunist *

Copies: 3 | Cost: 1

Opportunist allows you to take an Item or Effect card from your discard pile and put it into your hand. This combos well with Divination and will help you find the Crown and the Trident quicker.

Poor Unfortunate Souls *

Copies: 1 | Cost: 2

Poor Unfortunate Souls allows you to move all heroes in Ursula’s realm to an adjacent unlocked location. This could potentially allow you to clean house if all the heroes in your realm have Binding Contracts on them and are positioned correctly.

Whirlpool *

Copies: 3 | Cost: 1

Whirlpool allows you to move a hero to any unlocked location. This card is a death sentence to any hero that has a Binding Contract attached.

Item Cards

Ursula's Item Cards

Binding Contract *

Copies: 6 | Cost: 2

There are four different Binding Contract cards in Ursula’s deck. When played, you attach the Binding Contract to a hero and that hero is defeated when moved to the specified location. Each Binding Contract has the same effect, but each has a different location specified.

It is worth noting that there are more binding contracts that specify Eric’s Ship and The Shore locations since these will always be unlocked. So Ursula’s Lair and The Palace only have one Binding Contract each.

Cauldron

Copies: 1 | Cost: 1

When the Cauldron is activated, Ursula gains two power for each Binding Contract in her realm. This can be an excellent way to gain a boatload of power quickly. This is the only card in Ursula’s deck which helps her gain power so make it count.

Crown *

Copies: 1 | Cost: 4

When the Crown is activated, you may look at the top two cards of your fate deck and you have the choice to either discard them or return them to the top of the fate deck in any order. This card must be played and moved to Ursula’s Lair to win the game.

Trident *

Copies: 1 | Cost: 4

When Trident is played, find King Triton and play him to this card’s location. Trident is then attached to King Triton and can only be returned to Ursula after she defeats King Triton. This card must be played and moved to Ursula’s Lair to win the game. So focus on defeating King Triton quickly.

Ursula’s Card Stats

Disney Villainous Ursula's Card Types

As you can see from the chart Ursula mostly uses effect and item cards. Ursula has little to no ally cards since she cannot perform vanquish actions. She focuses on using effect cards to manipulate heroes and obtain what she desires most.

We can break down Ursula’s cards even further and look at her abilities. This will give us greater insight into the best strategy and how to win.

Ursula’s Abilities Stats

Disney Villainous Ursula's Abilities

Additional Action

Ursula is able to use the actions at adjacent locations using the Grow Giant card. Use this to access actions that are being blocked by the lock token.

Move the Lock Token

Ursula is unable to remove the lock token from her realm. It will always occupy either Ursula’s Lair or The Palace. The card Change Form will help her to move the token between these locations. Be sure to plan ahead and don’t lock yourself out of a location.

Binding Contract & Move Heroes

Binding Contract takes up 20% of Ursula’s deck. This makes sense considering it is the only way she is able to defeat heroes. Still, 20% is not that much so defeating heroes will be easier said than done.

In order to defeat heroes, Ursula must move them to the specified location noted on the Binding Contract. So it makes sense that another 20% of her deck allows you to move heroes.

Burn / Recover Cards

Most of Ursula’s deck consists of cards that will allow you to search for your Crown and Trident. Cards like Divination and Opportunist will help you do just that.

Ursula’s Player Board

Ursula's Player Board

Ursula has a slight disadvantage since she will only ever have three of her four locations unlocked at any given time. The Palace is initially locked and can only be unlocked by moving the lock token to Ursula’s Lair with the card Change Form.

Ursula’s Lair

The four actions at Ursula’s Lair include:

  • Gain 1 Power
  • Activate
  • Move an Item or Ally
  • Play a Card

Both gain power and activate are in the top position so these are the actions that are at risk of being covered by a hero card.

This location is handy for the fact that you have to get the Crown and the Trident here to win the game. The move item action will help you achieve this goal. There is also an activate action that will allow you to use Flotsam and Jetsam’s ability to move heroes.

Eric’s Ship

The four actions at Eric’s Ship include:

  • Gain 1 Power
  • Play a Card
  • Fate
  • Discard

Both gain power and play a card are in the top position so these are the actions that are at risk of being covered by a hero card.

There isn’t anything too special about this location except the discard action. This will help you find the cards you need to win the game and the fate action will help slow your opponents down.

The Shore

The four actions at The Shore include:

  • Play a Card
  • Discard
  • Gain 3 Power
  • Play a Card

Both play a card and discard are in the top position so these are the actions that are at risk of being covered by a hero card.

Any location that gives you three power and lets you play two cards on the same turn is more than likely the best location. The Shore is no exception.

This is your most useful location especially since Ursula doesn’t have any cards in her deck that helps her gain power other than Cauldron.

The Palace

The four actions at The Palace are:

  • Move an Item or Ally
  • Fate
  • Move a Hero
  • Gain 2 Power

Both move and item or ally and fate are in the top position so these are the actions that are at risk of being covered by a hero card.

This location will be extremely useful thanks to its move a hero action and its gain power action. Of course, you will need to use Change Form before moving here so I would recommend unlocking this location early on if possible.

How to Win as Ursula

So now that you know how to play as Ursula and how her mechanics work, let’s take a look at these tips to win as Ursula in Disney Villainous.

Be Prepared for King Triton

When you play the Trident, King Triton is played to the same location and takes the Trident from you. If you play the Trident to Eric’s Ship then King Triton will also be played here. You need the Crown and the Trident at Ursula’s Lair to win the game and Eric’s Ship is the closest to Ursula’s Lair. You will want to play the green Binding Contract card to King Triton and move him to Ursula’s Lair, defeating him and taking back the Trident at Ursula’s Lair, potentially winning the game.

Keep the Crown and the Trident Safe

Ariel is a real threat to Ursula. Ariel is able to take an item from Ursula and as long as she is in play then Ursula cannot move allies or items. This is no good for you. To avoid this, you can lock the Crown or the Trident inside Ursula’s Lair for safekeeping. Once a location is locked, nothing can be moved to or from that location unless otherwise stated in an effect.

Burn Through Your Deck

Ursula has quite a few cards that can help her find the Crown and the Trident. Although some may come at the cost of discarding these two items. Don’t worry if they get discarded because it may actually help you. Ursula has the card Opportunist, which allows you to take items from your discard pile and add them to your hand.

How to Beat Ursula

Ursula can be a tough villain to play against. But don’t worry I got you covered. Here are a few tips to help stop Ursula from winning.

Where Should You Play Heroes?

The Shore is Ursula’s most valuable location so playing heroes here is a must. This will block the play a card action and the discard action. This location has two play a card actions so getting rid of one will slow Ursula down.

The Palace is another important location to Ursula since it has a move item action. Covering this up will limit her ability to move the crown and the trident.

If Ursula has Flotsam or Jetsam in play then playing a hero to Ursula’s lair will render them useless.

Ursula’s Fate Cards

Ursula's Fate Cards

Note: Cards with a * next to them are the most important to stop Ursula.

Ariel *

Copies: 1 | Strength: 4

When played, Ariel can move an unattached item from an unlocked location to her location. Until she is defeated Ursula cannot use the move an item or ally action. Play Ariel to The Palace as this is the furthest location from Ursula’s Lair and use her ability to take the Crown or Trident from Ursula.

Dinglehopper

Copies: 2

Dinglehopper must be attached to a hero. Each time Ursula moves to this location she loses one power. This can really be annoying for Ursula since she doesn’t have many ways to gain power outside her player board.

Eric *

Copies: 1 | Strength: 4

When played, Eric can move a hero to any unlocked location. Use Eric to move any hero with a Binding Contract away from the specified location noted on their Binding Contract. This can really annoy Ursula if she was close to defeating King Triton.

Flounder

Copies: 1 | Strength: 1

When played, Flounder allows you to shuffle Ursula’s discard pile into her deck. If you see that the Crown or the Trident has been discarded then it’s possible that Ursula is gearing up to play the card, Opportunist. This allows her to find an item card from her discard pile and add it to her hand. Use Flounder to shuffle them back into her deck and this will hopefully slow Ursula down.

Grimsby

Copies: 1 | Strength: 2

When Played, you may move the lock token to either Ursula’s Lair or The Palace.  Grimsby lets you lock Ursula out of her own lair. Talk about annoying. This can slow her down quite a bit.

King Triton

Copies: 1 | Strength: 6

The cost to play effects or Binding Contracts that target King Triton is increased by one power. Ursula needs to defeat King Triton to win the game so his ability will make it harder for Ursula to play a Binding Contract.

Max

Copies: 1 | Strength: 3

If Max is played to Ursula’s location then you can move Ursula to any unlocked location. Move Ursula to The Shore so she cannot move there on her next turn. This will stop her from gaining a lot of power.

Return to Form *

Copies: 3

Return to Form lets you choose a hero with a strength of four or less from Ursula’s discard pile and play that hero to Ursula’s location.

Scuttle

Copies: 1 | Strength: 2

When played, Scuttle allows you to take an item from Ursula’s fate discard pile and attach it to him. Snarfblat is the most useful item so I would choose this one if it is in the discard pile.

Sebastian *

Copies: 1 | Strength: 2

When played, Sebastian allows you to transfer a Binding Contract from a hero at an unlocked location to Sebastian. He makes a great shield for more important heroes like King Triton or Ariel.

Snarfblat

Copies: 2

Snarfblat must be attached to a hero. This card increases the cost to play a Binding Contract on that hero by three power. It’s hard for Ursula to gain power in general so this card will really annoy her. Attach it to King Triton and it will make it hard for Ursula to complete her goal.

Conclusion – Villainous Strategy for Ursula

Ursula is one of the hardest villains to win as in Disney Villainous. Her Binding Contract cards make for an interesting mechanic and if you don’t know Ursula’s strategies then it will be that much harder for you to win. In a nutshell, Ursula’s strategy is this:

Burn Through Your Deck

Use Divination and Opportunist together to burn through your deck and find the Crown and the Trident.

Play the Trident to Eric’s Ship

Playing the Trident here will make it easy to defeat King Triton and potentially win the game once you play the green Binding Contract to him.

Manipulate the Lock Token

Use the Lock Token to keep the Crown or the Trident safe from Ariel inside Ursula’s Lair.
